Predictions: Kentucky and Oregon (May 20th)

Posted by michaelmee on May 15, 2008

The Media is strange. After his victory in North Carolina, they proclaimed from their podiums that nothing could stop Barack Obama. They claimed, “it’s over”, that there was a nominee. But then, Hillary Clinton won West Virginia by 40%.

But if the pundits were as up on the issues as they make themselves seem to be, they’d have known that a 40 point Clinton victory was actually pretty likely when they completely ignored the state on May 6th. So either the media was simply unaware of what the polls were showing, or they are purposefully stirring up conflict where it doesn’t exist now. Which brings us to Kentucky and Oregon.

Kentucky

Much like West Virginia, Kentucky will go heavily for Clinton. Despite punditual claims that Obama needs to come close, or even win, in Kentucky now that he has been endorsed by John Edwards, the opposite remains true. Kentucky will have no effect on who wins this nomination. Obama is still the nominee, barring a major scandal going his way. Most polls show Clinton up between 25%-30% in the state, albeit, before Edward’s endorsement.

West Virginia trended away from Obama in the final days. Kentucky might not, thanks to Edwards.

Prediction: Hillary 61%, Obama 39%

Oregon

Oregon will go to Obama, and pretty easily. But it will most likely be smaller than the margin by which Hillary beats him in Kentucky.

Still, a big Obama win will give up a majority of pledged delegates which cannot be overtaken by Hillary Clinton, and word on the street is that Obama will make a big overall victory speech - effectively declaring himself the Democratic nominee. Polls have been trending towards Obama, and I expect that to continue in the final days. A North Carolina sized win will come here for Obama.

Prediction: Obama 58%, Clinton 42%
